Sites of the Week: March 15, 2014

“Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

- John F. Kennedy

Factoid: U.S. regional airlines are facing a pilot shortage due to low salaries. Starting pilot salaries at 14 U.S. regional carriers average $22,400 a year, with some paying just $15,000—that is, the minimum wage.

Now on to this week’s sites. This week, I’m sending out three ‘Site of the Week’ recommendations.

CuteStat
http://www.cutestat.com/

This site provides Website stats for any site entered. For example, if you entered linkedin.com, you will learn that the site is 11 years old, has a global traffic rank of #12 in the world, a Google PageRank of 9/10 and the website has an estimated worth of $ 736,089,120.00 with daily income of $681,564.00 and much more.

World Wide Words
http://www.worldwidewords.org/wordsearch.htm

If you find etymology interesting, then you’ll love this archive of the meanings and origins of thousands of phrases, sayings, idioms and expressions. You can find the history of expressions such as “Six ways from Sunday” and my personal favorite “…and Bob’s your uncle.”

1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die
http://www.slate.com/blogs/_1001_movies

This site comes to you via my wife, Betty. The site states “More than just a barrage of well-timed film clips, images are assembled according to aesthetic themes and using a variety of editing techniques, including split-screen and rotating grid blocks. In its 10-minute run-time, the video never gets lazy or boring. Enjoy.” While I would agree it’s very well done and entertaining, my complaint is it would be difficult to make a personal list of movies you still need to see before you die since the movies aren’t identified and the images rush by making it likely you’ll only recognize movies you’ve already seen.
