Sites of the Week: February 9, 2013

“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.”

My friend Dale e-mailed me in response to last week’s Site of the Week ‘Fastest Gun’  (http://www.wimp.com/fastestgunman/).  I thought what he wrote was so interesting that I asked if I could share it. Dale wrote:

Thanks for being brave with your posting about the death of Bob Munden.  I knew Bob personally through Cowboy Action Shooting, which Karin and I did for several years.  The feats ascribed to Bob are right-on.  He was the fastest, fast-draw shooter I’ve ever seen, along with being a very personable guy, so easy to talk to and willing to discuss most of his secrets – lots of practice, a finely tuned pistol with a hair trigger, a break-away holster, and great athletic skill.

Cowboy Action Shooting is a sport sponsored by the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS).  One of my cousins in California was a founding member of SASS.  I would guess there are now over 100,000 members with multiple clubs in every state and many clubs in several countries around the world.  At SASS events, everyone has to dress in old west costumes and shoot at an old west Hollywood type stage using pre-1897 single-action weapons — two six-shooters (5 rounds each), one shotgun (typically 2 rounds then reload 2 rounds), and one lever-action rifle (typically 10 rounds).   The best shooters fire off all 24 rounds in less than 24 seconds without a target miss.  Editorial: “Sounds almost like assault weapon action, but with pre-1897 single-action guns.” http://www.sassnet.com/About-What-is-SASS-001A.php

Now on to this week’s sites.  This week, I’m sending out three ‘Site of the Week’ recommendations.

Grey Explains
http://www.youtube.com/user/CGPGrey

This YouTube channel by C.G.P. Grey is dedicated to “Complex things explained”. To get the ball rolling so to speak, I’ll share a few I found interesting: 5 Historical Misconceptions Rundown,  The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained,  10 Misconceptions Rundown and 8 Animal Misconceptions Rundown.

Prezi
http://prezi.com/

Prezi is a cloud-based presentation tool. Prezi is really more than just an alternative to PowerPoint. There are many cool features including real-time collaboration and presentation options such as a zoom capability. You can learn more here about its features and how easy it is to use.  You can present online or off and a free iPad app is offered. There are three levels of licensing beginning with FREE which offers 100MB of storage but all of your Prezi presentations are public. Paid membership begins at $4.92/month.

luminAID
http://www.luminaidlab.com/

This site offers an inflatable solar-powered light that weigh only 3 ounces and packs flat.  The LuminAID lantern recharges in 4-5 hours of direct sunlight and provides 8 hours of LED light. I recently purchased one. Although we haven’t gone camping with it yet, it seems very good. You can buy one ($18.95) for yourself or donate one for only $10. 1.6 billion people around the world lack proper access to electricity. LuminAID has distributed thousands of lights through their Give Light Projects in more than a dozen countries to individuals.
