Sites of the Week: January 5, 2014

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”

John Steinbeck

Factoid: “Marijuana smoke contains 50 percent to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke and has the potential to cause cancer of the lungs and respiratory tract. Marijuana smoke is commonly inhaled deeper and held longer than is tobacco smoke, increasing the lungs’ exposure to carcinogens.”

Mayo Clinic report, published in 2006

Now on to this week’s sites. This week, I’m sending out three ‘Site of the Week’ recommendations.

Adult Fitness Test
http://adultfitnesstest.org/

The Adult Fitness Test site provides instructions and data collection form for performing 4 fitness tests (aerobic, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition). After you complete the testing, enter your data online to receive an evaluation.

Duolingo
http://www.duolingo.com/

“Learn a language while translating the Web.” This site comes to via my daughter, Erin. Now you can learn English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish FREE. Somebody who needs a webpage translated uploads it to Duolingo. That document then gets presented to Duolingo students who can translate it in order to practice the language they are learning. When the document is fully translated, Duolingo returns it to the original content owner who, depending on the type of document they uploaded, pays for the translation. The site includes free Android and iPhone apps.

How Y’all, Youse and You Guys Talk
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html?_r=0

This site is similar to a June 15, 2013 post and comes to you via my friend, George. Answer 25 questions and the site will show you a dialect map indicating your region of the country. George told me that two co-workers answered the questions and the site correctly guessed the actual towns where they grew up. I didn’t have as accurate results. Since I’ve moved a lot over the years, I attempted to answer the questions as I would have while in Portsmouth, Ohio. That was a long time ago so perhaps my memory isn’t so good. The site said I was from Des Moines, Iowa.
